Across the Himalayas in a 128 Days
Jane Poretsis interviews Sunil Tamang
Sunil Tamang’s great passion for adventure started at the young age of just 8 years old – when he ran away from home to see the JanaiPurnima Festival in GosainKunda, a few villages away.
Twelve years later he still remembers vividly asking first his mother and then his father if he could go. Sadly they said he could not as it was two days walk away and they thought he was too young, plus they were both too busy to take him.

With a burning curiosity to see some great occasion outside his area and all he had ever known, he decided the very next day to tag along with a group of villagers heading that way with great excitement. His father, who went looking for him, met him on his way back home.
This was a pivotal point when his family realised that they had both a determined and rather adventurous child; a memory and experience that still serves Sunil to this day with great motivation.
“I think that was the day I discovered my true passion,” says Sunil Tamang.
Sunil was born and raised in the village of Syaphru Bensi situated in the Rasuwa region, Nepal, a district in the Himalaya. Located north of Kathmandu the capital and bordering Tibet in the north.
