A Royal Wedding in a Magical Kingdom
by Jane Poretsis
On this day, 31 year old King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck married the beautiful 21 year old student Jetsun Pema; in a 17th century monastic fortress in Punakha , the former capitol of Bhutan.
The day was marked by processions and solemn ritual. Celebratory songs, the beating of drums and traditional trumpets also resounded across the courtyard of the ancient monastery.

Nervously, Pema entered the fortress and walked slowly down to the throne eyes downcast and spread herself across the floor in front of her King and husband to be. The Oxford educated King stepped down from his throne and adorned with royal scarves took the chalice filled with the ambrosia of eternal life from his bride, which he drank; he then placed a crown upon her head and led her to her throne, a Queen.
Take a look at these stunning Royal Wedding photographs courtesy of the King’s photographer Dorji Wangchuk.
